Buying a pool table is a significant investment. The wrong choice means years of frustration, while the right table provides decades of entertainment. Here’s everything you need to know.
Size Selection
Room Requirements
Add the length of your cue (58 inches standard) to each dimension of the table. This is the minimum room size.
- 7-foot table — Minimum room: 13′ x 16′. Bar size, good for casual play
- 8-foot table — Minimum room: 13.5′ x 17′. Most popular home size
- 9-foot table — Minimum room: 14′ x 18′. Tournament regulation size
Slate vs Non-Slate
Slate (Recommended)
Natural stone ground to a perfectly flat surface. 3-piece slate is standard. Provides the truest roll and most consistent play surface. Properly installed slate tables can last generations.
MDF/Slatron
Engineered wood or synthetic alternatives. Cheaper but warp over time, especially in humid environments. Acceptable for very casual play but not recommended for anyone serious about the game.
Frame and Construction
Solid hardwood frames resist warping and support the weight of slate (500+ pounds for a 3-piece). Avoid particle board or MDF frames — they won’t hold up long-term.
Cloth Selection
Worsted wool cloth plays faster and lasts longer than woolen cloth. Most tables come with standard woolen cloth — upgrading to worsted is worth the cost for serious players.
Cushions (Rails)
K-66 profile rubber cushions are the standard. Fresh cushions give a lively, consistent bounce. Dead cushions are the most common problem with used tables — budget for replacement if buying secondhand.

Accessories You’ll Need
A complete setup includes: cue rack, quality house cues, a full billiard ball set, table brush, chalk, triangle/diamond rack, and a table cover for when not in use.

New vs Used
A quality used table (with new cloth and cushions) often plays better than a cheap new table. Factor in moving costs — slate tables require professional movers ($300-600) and a qualified installer for leveling.
