How to Break in Pool: Power, Accuracy, and Cue Ball Control

The break shot sets the tone for the entire game. A powerful, controlled break can sink balls and leave the cue ball in a favorable position. Here’s how to develop a break that wins games.

Stance and Setup

Widen your stance slightly compared to normal shots. Position yourself for a square hit on the head ball. Your bridge should be firm and stable — the break generates forces that can shift a loose bridge.

The Power Myth

Most beginners think the break is about pure power. It’s not. A controlled 18 mph break that hits squarely is far more effective than a wild 25 mph break that’s off-center. Square contact transfers maximum energy to the rack.

Cue Ball Placement

In 8-ball, most pros place the cue ball slightly off-center (about one ball’s width from center). This creates a wider spread pattern. In 9-ball, center placement with a square hit on the 1-ball is standard.

Follow Through

Don’t decelerate through the break. Your cue tip should finish well past where the cue ball was. Think of driving through the ball, not hitting at it.

Controlling the Cue Ball

After the break, the cue ball should stop near the center of the table. This gives you the best chance at your first shot regardless of where balls end up.

• Stop shot break — Hit with slight draw to kill the cue ball near center
• Follow break — Top spin sends the cue ball forward into the pack
• Cut break — Hit the second ball instead of the head ball for a different spread pattern

Practice Drill

Set up a full rack and break 20 times. Count how many times the cue ball stays on the table and ends up in the center zone. Aim for 80% or better before increasing speed.

Equipment Matters
