Billiard Room Lighting Guide: Why Proper Lighting Changes Your Game

Lighting affects every shot you take. Shadows on the table create optical illusions that make aiming harder. Glare on balls makes contact points harder to see. Proper lighting is as important as a level table.

Height and Position

Pool table lights should hang 32-36 inches above the playing surface (measured from the bed of the table, not the rails). This height illuminates the entire playing surface evenly without blinding players when they lean down for shots.

Coverage

The light fixture should illuminate the entire playing surface plus 6-12 inches beyond the rails. Dark edges create shadows that affect shot visualization, especially on bank shots and kick shots.

Light Types

Multi-Shade Fixtures

Three or four individual shades in a row. Classic look, good coverage. Choose shades that direct light downward without spilling light into players’ eyes.

Box/Island Fixtures

A large rectangular fixture that covers the entire table. Best coverage and most even illumination. More modern appearance.

LED vs Incandescent

LED fixtures use less energy, generate less heat, and last longer. Choose warm white (2700-3000K) for comfortable playing. Avoid cool/blue-white LEDs — they create harsh shadows and unflattering color rendition on the cloth.

Common Mistakes

  • Fixture too high — shadows appear on the table
  • Fixture too low — glare on balls and uncomfortable leaning
  • Too few lumens — can’t see contact points clearly
  • Exposed bulbs — glare directly in players’ eyes during certain shots

Room Ambient Lighting

Keep room lighting dim enough that the table is the brightest area but bright enough that players aren’t blinded by contrast when looking up from the table. Dimmer switches for room lights give you control.

Installation

Mount the fixture centered over the table. Support it from the ceiling structure (not just drywall). Most multi-shade fixtures weigh 20-40 pounds. Use a licensed electrician for hardwired installations.
