Snooker vs Pool: Rules, Table Differences, and Which Game to Try

Pool and snooker share ancestry but play very differently. Understanding the differences helps you decide which game to try and appreciate both sports.

Table Size

• Pool: 7-foot (bar), 8-foot (home), or 9-foot (tournament)
• Snooker: 12 feet by 6 feet. Significantly larger than any pool table

The larger table makes snooker exponentially more difficult. Shots that are routine on a pool table become challenging on a snooker table simply due to distance.

Balls

• Pool: 15 numbered balls (2.25″ diameter) plus cue ball
• Snooker: 21 balls (2.07″ diameter) — 15 reds worth 1 point each, plus 6 colors worth 2-7 points

Pockets

Snooker pockets are smaller relative to ball size and have rounded edges (pool pockets are “cut” — angled in). This means snooker requires significantly more accuracy to pocket balls.

Gameplay

Pool (8-Ball)

Pocket your group (solids or stripes), then the 8-ball. Games last 5-15 minutes. Strategy balances offense and defense.

Snooker

Alternate potting reds and colors. Each red must be followed by a color (which is re-spotted until all reds are gone). Frames can last 30+ minutes. Heavy emphasis on safety play and tactical positioning.

Skill Transfer

Pool players who try snooker find their cue ball control and safety play improve dramatically when they return to pool. The larger table forces precision that makes a pool table feel easy by comparison.

Cultural Differences

Pool dominates in North America. Snooker dominates in the UK, parts of Asia, and increasingly worldwide. Both sports have professional circuits, but snooker’s largest events draw bigger global television audiences.

Which to Start With

Start with pool. Smaller tables, bigger pockets, and faster games provide more immediate satisfaction. Once you’re comfortable with cue ball control and basic position play, try snooker for a humbling — and ultimately rewarding — challenge.
