Your vehicle is your most likely location during an emergency. Whether it’s a natural disaster during your commute, a breakdown in a remote area, or a sudden evacuation, a well-organized vehicle gives you options.
Trunk/Cargo Area Setup
Primary Kit
A medium duffel or cargo bin containing:
- Season-appropriate clothing change
- Walking shoes/boots (if you commute in dress shoes)
- Rain poncho
- Work gloves
- Basic tools: multi-tool, duct tape, zip ties
- Flashlight and headlamp with charged batteries

Water and Food
1 gallon of water per person (rotate seasonally — freezing/heat degrades containers). Energy bars and nuts that tolerate temperature swings.
Center Console / Glove Box
- Small flashlight
- Cash in small bills ($50-100)
- Paper map of your area (phones die)
- Emergency contact list (paper — can’t access phone contacts without power)
- Basic first aid supplies: bandages, medication, antiseptic
Behind the Seat
- Fire extinguisher (BC or ABC rated)
- Emergency blanket or bivvy sack
- Small pry bar
- Seat belt cutter and window breaker (mount within reach of driver’s seat)
MOLLE Panel Organization

Seat-back MOLLE panels turn your headrest area into organized storage. Mount first aid pouches, admin pouches, and utility pouches where passengers can access them easily.
Seasonal Adjustments
Winter: Add sand/cat litter for traction, ice scraper, extra warm layers, hand warmers, small shovel.
Summer: Extra water, sunscreen, electrolyte packets, wide-brim hat.
Get-Home Bag
If you commute far from home, keep a small “get-home bag” in your vehicle with supplies for walking home: comfortable shoes, water, snacks, rain gear, and navigation tools.
