Pool Table Room Setup: Dimensions, Lighting, and Accessories You Need

Before buying a pool table, measure your room. The #1 mistake is a room that’s too small — you need 5 feet of clearance on every side for a full stroke.

Room Size Requirements

These assume 58-inch cues. Shorter cues (48″) work in tighter spaces but limit your shot options.

Lighting

A proper pool light hangs 32-36 inches above the table surface, centered over the table. LED panels provide even, shadow-free illumination. Avoid single-bulb fixtures — they create shadows in corners.

Essential Accessories

• Regulation ball set — don’t use the cheap balls that came with the table
• Maintenance kit — brush the felt before every session
• Wall-mounted cue rack — keeps cues straight and accessible
• Quality chalk — not the free cubes from the bar

Flooring

Carpet or rubber mat under and around the table. Hard floors chip dropped balls and make standing for hours uncomfortable. Plus, dropped cue tips bounce on hard floors.
