Watch any professional pool player and you’ll notice something: they do the exact same thing before every shot. That’s a pre-shot routine, and it’s the single biggest improvement most amateur players can make.
Why Routines Matter
A pre-shot routine eliminates decision-making during the shot itself. When your body knows exactly what comes next, your stroke becomes automatic. Pressure situations don’t affect you because the routine is the same whether it’s practice or a tournament final.
Building Your Routine (5 Steps)
Step 1: Read the Table
Before you approach the shot, stand back and plan. Identify your target ball, pocket, and where you need the cue ball to go next. This is strategy time, not shooting time.
Step 2: Approach and Align
Walk to the table on the line of the shot. Place your bridge hand first, then settle into your stance. Your body should be aligned with the shot line before you grip the cue.

Step 3: Practice Strokes
Take exactly the same number of practice strokes every time. Most pros use 3-5 practice strokes. These aren’t random — they’re rehearsing the exact speed and line of the shot.
Step 4: Pause and Commit
After your last practice stroke, pause at the back of your stroke. This is your commitment point. If anything feels wrong, stand up and restart. Never shoot from a bad position.
Step 5: Execute
Deliver the stroke smoothly through the cue ball. Keep your head down and your eyes on the contact point. Don’t look up to watch the ball — you’ll hear it drop.
Common Mistakes
- Rushing the routine under pressure
- Changing the number of practice strokes
- Shooting without re-checking alignment
- Standing up during the stroke to watch the result
Practice your routine on easy shots until it’s automatic. Then it’ll be there when you need it on the hard ones.
