Summer is approaching, and if you’re planning beach trips, lake days, or pool time with your dog, water safety should be your top priority. Not every dog is a natural swimmer — and even strong swimmers face risks from currents, exhaustion, and cold water.
Can Your Dog Actually Swim?
Common myth: all dogs can swim. Reality: many breeds struggle in water.
Natural swimmers: Labrador Retrievers, Golden Retrievers, Portuguese Water Dogs, Irish Setters
Struggle in water: Bulldogs, Pugs, Dachshunds, Basset Hounds, Corgis (short legs + heavy bodies = sinking)
Even “water breeds” need supervision. Fatigue, cold, and currents can overwhelm any dog.
The Non-Negotiable: Dog Life Jackets
A high-buoyancy life jacket is essential for any dog near open water. The top grab handle lets you pull your dog out quickly in an emergency.

Sizing matters: Measure your dog’s chest girth (the widest part behind the front legs). Too loose and they slip out; too tight restricts breathing.
Hydration at the Water
Dogs that swim often drink lake or ocean water — which can cause vomiting, diarrhea, or salt poisoning. Bring a portable water bottle and offer fresh water every 15-20 minutes.

Post-Swim Cooling
After vigorous swimming, dogs can overheat during the walk back to the car. A cooling bandana provides instant relief — soak it in lake water and wrap around their neck.

Water Training Tips
- Start shallow — let your dog wade before swimming
- Stay close — be within arm’s reach during first swims
- Use positive reinforcement — treats and praise build confidence
- Watch for fatigue — heavy panting, low tail, and slow paddling mean “get out now”
- Rinse after — chlorine, salt, and algae irritate skin
Emergency Preparedness
Pack a pet first aid kit for water outings. Common water injuries include paw cuts from shells/rocks, jellyfish stings, and ear infections from trapped water.
