How to Choose the Right Pool Cue Weight for Your Playing Style

Pool cue weight affects every shot you take. Too heavy and you lose finesse. Too light and you lose power. Here’s how to find your sweet spot.
Standard Weight Range: 18-21 oz
Most production cues weigh between 18-21 ounces. Our carbon fiber cue is 19 oz — right in the middle, which works for 80% of players.
Light Cues (18-19 oz)
Best for: Finesse players, position play, soft touch shots
- Better cue ball control
- Easier english/spin
- Less fatigue during long sessions
- May lack power on break shots
Heavy Cues (20-21 oz)
Best for: Power players, break shots, straight-in shots
- More momentum = harder hits with less effort
- Steadier stroke (weight dampens wobble)
- Less cue ball deflection
- Harder to finesse delicate position
How to Test
- Borrow cues of different weights from your pool hall
- Hit 20 straight-in shots with each weight
- Hit 10 draw shots (pull the cue ball back)
- The weight that feels “invisible” is your weight
Break Cue vs Playing Cue

Medium Cues (19-19.5 oz)
Best balance of power and control. Comfortable for extended sessions. Most manufactured cues default to this range.
Heavy Cues (20-21 oz)
More mass = more energy transfer on hard shots. Can feel sluggish for delicate position play. More tiring over long sessions.
How to Find Your Ideal Weight
Try cues at different weights. Hit soft position shots AND power shots with each. The right weight feels effortless on soft shots while controllable on hard shots.

Many quality cues include removable weight bolts in the butt end, allowing half-ounce adjustments. Best way to fine-tune without buying a new cue.
